At the Vale Farm we are always looking for new initiatives which bring educational establishments together with "big business". It was several months ago when we decided to contact both B&Q and Sainsbury’s, to see if we could recycle any waste which they may have. Both companies asked us to ring local stores, which we did. Sainsburys and B&Q in Aston-Under-Lyne were tremendous, saving us waste fruit and vegetables and partly damaged sheds.
The fruit and vegetables which would otherwise be thrown away are fed to the animals; this not only saves on the farm’s budget, is a form of recycling but it also shows that "Big Companies" can and will work hand in hand with educational establishments on sustainable projects.
The partly damaged sheds have been erected and used as rabbit hutches, chicken coops and duck houses, once again helping the farm budget.
I would especially like to thank at Sainsburys the produce manager and his staff and at B&Q Mike Knight and his staff for the fantastic service which they offer us. I would also like to thank their customer service departments at each store for their courteous manner and helpfulness.
